Tonight is week two in Minnesota State High School Football. There is almost 180 games that will be going on tonight around the state. Below is our weekly Gopher247 preview of some of the top match-ups and what to watch for.
Where Gopher247 Will Be
No. 5 East Ridge at Roseville
Gopher247 Analyst Joe Funk will be stopping by Roseville High School as they host No. 5 East Ridge.
Roseville and QB Jacques Perra upset Cretin-Derham Hall last week 15-12. Perra currently holds a preferred walk-on offer from the University of Minnesota. He threw for 182 yards, 2 TD and 1 INT in the win.
The visitors from East Ridge beat up White Bear Lake last week 48-15. Sophomore QB Seth Green, who already has offers from Minnesota and Louisville, was 7 for 11 for 168 yards and 1 TD and INT each.
Senior RB Nick Leach carried the load with 228 yards rushing on only 15 attempts. Nick also got into the end zone twice. Sophomore WR Kjetil Cline had a big night with 4 catches for 144 yards and a score.
Another stud at East Ridge to watch is current 4-star Alabama commit JC Hassenauer. JC is currently ranked the No. 1 Center in the nation on 247Composite, the industry's most comprehensive and unbiased prospect ranking system.
Others to watch for Roseville that are getting early D2 & D3 looks are Senior OT/DE Nick Hayes, Senior FB Matt Peckham, Junior WR/DB Jesper Horsted, Junior #6 RB Tommy Arcand and Juior #60 OC/DE Ty Hawton.
Chanhassen & 3-star OT Frank Ragnow host rival Chaska tonight. You can watch live via MSBN tonight!
Chaska at Chanhassen
I will be heading over to the Missota Conference rivalry game between Chaska and Chanhassen. Our Gopher247 team got to see Junior QB Justin Arnold and Senior RB/WR/CB Kolby Seiffert narrowly defeat Hopkins in Zero Week.
This will be our first opportunity however to see 3-star OT Frank Ragnow perform in person. Frank currently is getting a lot of attention from top programs around the country and is ranked the 39th OT according to 247Composite. Last weekend, Ragnow made an unofficial visit to Wisconsin, and headed back home with an offer from the Badgers. With Wisconsin; Florida State, Arkansas and Minnesota are other top programs making a strong push for the 6-foot-6, 291-pound athletic OT.
Tonight will also be RB Raymonte Maynard’s first game of the season. Raymonte currently holds an offer from UND, and gives the Storm a power back to run behind Ragnow and fellow Senior OL Grant Aplin, who is another prospect to keep an eye on.
Chaska has had a week off since their Zero Week upset over Hopkins where QB Justin Arnold ran for 171 yards and 2 TDs. The question early will be if the week off helped Chaska or not, and if they can hit on their big plays again.
Gopher247’s Key Games to Watch
Minneapolis Edison at Minneapolis Washburn
Last week we were on hand to watch a back and forth 56-50 Washburn win over St. Paul Highland where 4-star Gopher commit Jeff Jones put up 350-plus all-purpose yards and 6 total touchdowns.
Gophers fans will be able to listen to Somerset & TE commit Gaelin Elmore's match-up with Osceola on the MSBN feeds tonight
After the game, Jeff made the short trip south to watch former Washburn teammate Jamison Whiting make his first career start for Northern Iowa as they upset Iowa State.
It will be interesting to see how many more TDs Jeff can put on the board tonight in week two.
Somerset at Osceola
Gophers 3-star TE commit Gaelin Elmore has been a beast on the defensive side of the ball as his Somerset squad starts off their season 2-0. Elmore has already recorded 4 forced fumbles and 3 sacks from the D-end position.
Owatonna at Winona
Gopher 3-star D-end Andrew Stelter and his Owatonna squad beat up Rochester Mayo 41-14 last week. In the match-up, Stelter recorded 5 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Tonight they head down to Winona, who is coming off a loss to Rochester John Marshall.
No. 3 Prior Lake at No. 1 Eden Prairie
Senior Blake Weber looks to keep Prior Lake undefeated, but has a huge match-up at Eden Prairie tonight
Possibly the best match-up of the week will be No. 3 Prior Lake heading to No. 1 ranked team in the state Eden Prairie. Both teams won their Week One battles in convincing fashion.
Eden Prairie brought a balanced rushing attack where Charlie Venable, Anthony Anderson, Matt Liebold and Dan Fisher all found the end zone. With the score so lopsided for EP last week, top D1 prospect TE Zach Hovey saw limited opportunities. Zach currently holds offers from Wyoming, UPenn, Florida Atlantic, Cornell and Bucknell.
For Prior Lake, Senior RB Alex Feine led the Lakers with 134 yards and 2 TDs on the ground. Junior OLB Alex Hart had 4 tackles and 1 INT from the defensive side of things. Sept. 1st was the first date colleges could start reaching out to the Junior class, and Hart received some brief contact with the University of Minnesota, where his older brother Nick Hart is a Freshman TE.
Another Laker that Gophers fans have been keeping an eye on is Senior RB/LB Blake Weber. Weber has yet to pick up an offer, but continues to receive strong interest from Drake, Iowa State, the 4 Dakota schools and Minnesota as well. All have told Blake they will be scouting him throughout his Senior season.
No. 2 Wayzata at Lakeville South
No. 2 Wayzata pulled out a close one last Friday night at Rosemount in double OT. Tonight they head to Lakeville South, where the Cougars are coming off a loss to cross town rival Lakeville North.
Prospects to watch start off with Wayzata Senior TE Brandon Lingen who had 2 catches last week, both going for TDs. Brandon currently has offers from Air Force and Florida Atlantic.
Senior DE Drew Greely is another to watch for Wayzata. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound DE currently holds offers from Air Force and North Dakota. Greely recorded 5 tackles and 1 tackle-for-loss last week at Rosemount.
No. 2 Wayzata & DE Drew Greely head to Lakeville South looking to go 2-0 on the season. Watch the game live via MSBN video feed tonight.
From Lakeville South, Junior 3-star MLB Josh Corcoran will be leaned on to slow the Trojans offense. Josh recorded 7 tackles and 1 sack in the loss to North last week. Josh is another local Junior that was in contact with Minnesota after the contact period for Juniors began this last week. He says he doesn’t have any unofficial visits set yet for this fall, but plans to stop at Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and NDSU.
Cretin-Derham Hall at Hastings
Cretin-Derham Hall heads to Hastings tonight off a loss to Roseville last week hoping to balance their record at 1-1.
Junior 5-star phenom DE Jashon Cornell recorded 4 sacks in the loss. After tonight’s game in Hasting, Cornell will be heading to Michigan for an unofficial visit and to watch tomorrow’s game against Notre Dame. Cornell has four other unofficial visits set this fall to Ohio State, Iowa, Wisconsin and Notre Dame.
Jashon is currently ranked the No. 17 overall prospect in the entire country on 247Composite. He will have help from Senior RB Blake Banham, who ran for 186 yards last week. Senior CB Tim Gordon and Senior QB Ricardo Johnson III are two other prospects to keep a closer eye on in this match-up from Cretin.
For Hastings, they were largely led by Senior QB Brandon McCarthy last week in their 20-9 win over Forest Lake. McCarthy only completed 3 passes for 27 yards, but recorded 148 and 2 TDs on the ground.
